Freak wave washes off expecting couple taking photos on California beach

A young California couple was swept away by a freak wave while taking photos on a Santa Cruz beach, authorities said.

Pedro David Guadarrama Ceron, 30, and Emma Nelly Diazleal Lopez, 33, drowned when a wave came out of nowhere and washed them off rocks near Mitchell’s Cove.

They were found floating face-down in the water by rescuers who brought them to shore.

  • “Advanced life support measures were immediately initiated as the victims were assisted on board the vessel and directed towards the harbor,” the Santa Cruz Fire Department said.

    “Despite uninterrupted resuscitative efforts, both victims succumbed to the elements and could not be resuscitated.”

    The couple was expecting a baby and planning to get married, the family said.
