Hero dad’s body recovered from W. Virginia lake one day after he drowned saving son

The body of a father who went missing after saving his son from a lake was located Tuesday night, one day after the tragedy.

25-year-old Kevaughn Jamar Montgomery died a hero on Monday when he jumped into Sutton Lake to save his struggling son who had slipped into the water from the family’s boat.

Montgomery’s body was located in a 12-foot-deep area of the lake near the Wolf Run area.

  • “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Montgomery during this difficult time,” said Bobby Cales, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Police Chief.

    Low visibility complicated rescuers’ mission to locate the body but they did not give up on the search, Cales added.

    “This tragedy underscores the importance of using life jackets and taking all necessary precautions on the water to ensure the safety of our loved ones while enjoying our beautiful waterways,” the Chief added.
