Driver charged after truck crashes into 2 SUVs; kills 5 people in North Carolina

The driver of a Freightliner tractor-trailer was arrested and charged after a crash that left five people dead in North Carolina Wednesday.

State Highway Patrol said that at around 1:30 p.m., the truck hauling orange juice failed to reduce its speed as traffic slowed for maintenance work in Wilson County.

The truck struck a Chevy Tahoe, a Toyota RAV-4, and two other tractor-trailers before bursting into flames.

  • Five occupants of the two cars died while the drivers of the tractors, including the Freightliner’s driver, sustained minor injuries.

    The Freightliner driver was taken into custody on five counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

    Investigators believe speed was involved in the deadly crash.
