Escalator fire at JFK Airport leaves 9 wounded

An escalator fire at John F. Kennedy International Airport left nine people wounded Wednesday, authorities said.

The fire was reported shortly after 7 a.m. local time, according to the FDNY.

The situation forced the evacuation of Terminal 8 due to the heavy smoke.

    “Flight operations at Terminal 8 have been impacted. Please check with your airline to determine the status of your flight,” airport officials posed on X.

    Roughly 1,000 people were transferred to other parts of the terminal and more than 160 flights were delayed because of the incident.

    The FDNY is investigating the cause of the fire.
