Washington DC news, Washington news.

President Joe Biden made a shock announcement on social media Sunday when he said he would drop out of the 2024 presidential race for the “best interest of the country.”

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” the 81-year-old commander-in-chief posted in a letter on X.

“And while it has been my intention to see reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Biden had been under growing pressure from fellow Democrats to abandon his reelection bid since his catastrophic debate with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party - and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,”

“We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”
