A Georgia inmate fatally shot a kitchen worker at a rural jail before turning the gun on himself early Sunday, officials said.
Inmate Jaydrekus Hart opened fire in the kitchen of Smith State Prison in rural southeast Georgia at 4:30 a.m. Sunday killing a food service worker.
He then used the same weapon to shoot himself dead. Immediate details surrounding the incident are not available.
“The weapon is in GDC custody at this time, and a complete and thorough investigation of what led up to this tragic incident will be carried out,” the Georgia Department of Corrections said in a statement.
The victim was only identified as an employee of the food service company Aramark.
Hart had reportedly been serving prison time since 2015 for voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery convictions in Carroll County.
