Car speeding through construction zone kills worker in Connecticut

A construction worker was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle on Wednesday, Hartford authorities said.

Jose Diaz-Nieves, 54, was working on a Metropolitan Commission project at the intersection of West Boulevard and South Whitney Street when the deadly crash occurred.

Police said 25-year-old Tommy Nguyen was driving at a high rate of speed through the construction site when he fatally struck Diaz-Nieves.

The suspect’s car was then disabled and he was detained at the scene.

    The victim was a private contractor for the MDC, Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert said.

    Nguyen was charged with manslaughter, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without insurance, and driving with a suspended license.

    His bond was set at $1 million. An investigation into the crash is underway.
