USM defensive back, 21, killed in overnight shooting

An overnight shooting at a Hattiesburg housing complex claimed the life of a standout University of Southern Mississippi football player, authorities said Wednesday.

21-year-old Marcus Daniels Jr. was fatally shot late Tuesday at the Ivy Row housing complex, police said.

The 6-foot-2 victim was a defensive back at Southern Mississippi starting as a cornerback last season.

    “Our hearts and prayers go out to the Daniels family,” Hattiesburg Police Chief Hardy Sims said.

    “We are doing all that we can to locate the perpetrators to bring justice to the victim and his family.”

    “We are asking the community for their help and to come forward with any information pertaining to this tragic incident and the untimely death of Marcus Daniels.”
