Passenger dies aboard California-bound flight after suffering medical emergency

A U.S. citizen died Saturday on a Fiji Airways flight heading to California, the airline said in a statement.

The 41-year-old passenger suffered a medical condition on flight FJ870 about an hour and a half before arriving at the San Francisco International Airport.

“Despite the best efforts of our cabin crew and a doctor on board who provided immediate assistance, the passenger unfortunately passed away,” the statement added.

  • The aircraft was given the priority for landing once at Francisco airport. The flight landed at 2:34 p.m. local time.

    “Fiji Airways ground operations and the relevant authorities were informed in advance and were prepared to meet the aircraft upon arrival,” the statement read.

    “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolence go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.”

    The decedent’s identity and the nature of the medical condition he suffered were not disclosed.
