DUI crash kills child; injures 2 others in Florida

A head-on crash involving a drunk driver left a 5-year-old girl dead and two other people wounded in Auburndale, Florida early Friday.

Robert Harrison, 24, is accused of driving while intoxicated in unincorporated Winter Haven causing a fatal crash just after midnight.

Harrison allegedly crossed the double yellow line and crashed head-on into an oncoming Dodge Caravan.

5-year-old Madeline Nichols was “killed instantly” and declared dead at the scene of the collision, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.

The girl’s mother, 32-year-old Jacqueline Nichols, was driving the van at the time of the deadly accident.

    Harrison allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol before driving.

    A breath sample showed he had a Breath Alcohol Content of 0.119 and 0.122. In Florida, the legal limit is .08.

    “This 5-year-old baby’s life was snuffed out because Robert Harrison was drunk and driving,” the sheriff commented.

    “Because of his stupidness of drinking and driving, this baby’s life has been snuffed out and that’s totally unacceptable.”
