Maintenance worker finds deceased newborn near Kansas City lake

A lifeless newborn’s body was discovered near a lake at a recreation area outside of Kansas City Saturday morning, police said.

An employee made the shocking discovery while performing routine maintenance work at the Maryville Mozingo Lake Recreation Park.

Police were called to the scene at approximately 11 a.m. The area was secured as officers processed the scene.

Maryville Public Safety Interim Police Chief Mike Stolte said that the body had been there for 6 to 12 hours before it was discovered.

  • “I don’t have any words for it. It’s not something that anyone should have to see,” Stolte said.

    Former Jackson County prosecutor Phil LeVota described the incident as a crime.

    “It cannot be in society that you would happen to leave a baby in the woods. That just can’t happen. So there will be accountability to some sort of crime,” he said.
