An investigation into the death of a newborn at the University of Tampa is underway after a lifeless baby was found in a garbage bin on campus Sunday night.
Police said the infant was wrapped in a towel and left in the garbage bin. The baby’s mother was located and taken to a hospital.
The investigation focused on the area of the McKay Hall dorm building area but police declined to disclose further details surrounding the incident.
“The loss of a child is always a tragedy,” Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said adding that the state had a “Safe Haven Law” allowing parents to surrender unwanted children younger than seven days at medical facilities and fire stations without being questioned.
“As our department actively investigates this incident, we want all expectant mothers to know there are resources available.”
