‘Unfortunate’: 2 residents die in Kansas house fire after being pulled out by heroic neighbor

Authorities in Kansas said that two residents of a home that caught fire Thursday morning died despite their neighbor’s heroic intervention to pull them out.

It took firefighters in Louisburg six minutes to arrive at the burning home in the 600 block of North 5th Street.

By the time they arrived, a neighbor had pulled out a man and a juvenile from the bedroom's window of the home.

One of them was declared dead at the scene while the other died at a hospital. The neighbor was also hospitalized in stable condition.

  • “Thankfully there were people around at the time of the fire, called it in, and were able to know where people might be inside,” said Lt. Andrew Francis.

    “Unfortunate that they were deceased, but they were able to get them out.”

    Fire crews from Overland Park and Paola assisted the Louisburg Fire Department at the scene.

    The fire took about five minutes to be extinguished. The Kansas State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.
