Authorities in Arizona rescued a baby that was shot multiple times at a home just before it erupted in flames following a standoff Friday afternoon.
A woman called 911 at around noon reporting that her baby’s father had broken into her Surprise home and held her hostage along with her 6-month-old child.
As officers forced their way into the home, they heard gunshots. The baby was found with multiple gunshot injuries to the “lower extremities.”
The baby’s mother managed to escape with only minor injuries. The suspect retreated to the back of the home where and a standoff ensued.
At around 3 p.m., the residence caught fire after a “huge ball of fire” was spotted coming from the back of the house. The flames spread to the front of the home and the roof collapsed.
Firefighters couldn’t approach the burning structure due to the armed suspect’s presence.
“Firefighters don’t wear bulletproof vests. Firefighters don’t have weapons so they are vulnerable in these kinds of situations,” said Andy Anderson, former assistant Phoenix police chief.
