Man drowns in Alabama river after car overturns; goes into water

Authorities in Alabama have identified the driver of a car that crashed and went into a south Alabama river early Thursday morning.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Senior Trooper McKinney said that the tragic incident occurred at around 6:55 a.m. on Alabama 130 near the 5-mile marker in Pike County.

A 2000 Honda CR-V left the roadway for unknown reasons, hit a posted traffic sign, and overturned, McKinney said. The car then went into a river.

  • The driver of the vehicle, identified as 66-year-old James Otis McCray, was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

    He was pulled out of the submerged car and pronounced dead at the scene.

    The ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division is investigating the crash.
