Young man drowns after car goes into Gulf Intercoastal Waterway during police chase

Authorities in Orange Beach, Alabama said that a 21-year-old man lost his life after his car became fully submerged in a waterway at the end of a police chase.

The tragic incident occurred at around 1:25 a.m. Friday when Brooks H. Kaechele’s car left the roadway and hit a guardrail, several trees, and traffic signs as he was being chased by officers.

  • The victim, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died when his 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse overturned and fell into the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway where it became fully submerged.

    Orange Beach officers were pursuing the victim at the time of the incident. The motive was not made public.

    Troopers said that the chase unfolded on Alabama 180 in Baldwin County. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
