Louisiana inmate shot dead by officers after trying to escape on way to court

Authorities in Louisiana are investigating after two officers opened fire at an inmate trying to escape on the way to court killing him Wednesday morning.

Raymond Huddleston, 46, was being transported to a Baton Rouge court alongside another inmate when he faked a seizure at around 7:30 a.m.

Catahoula Parish Correctional officers Mark Cagle and Johnny Nelson stopped the van on U.S. 61 near the Mississippi State Line and approached the inmate.

As the officers tried to help Huddleston, he allegedly lunged from the van, attacked them, and grabbed Nelson’s gun.

  • Huddleston struck the officers with the gun that was still in its holster but dropped it as he made his way to the driver’s seat.

    Both officers fired shots at the inmate “in an attempt to stop the threat of injuries to the other inmate and/ or other people.”

    Huddleston, who was arrested in March 2023 on several counts including aggravated kidnapping and domestic abuse, died from his injuries.

    Catahoula Parish Sheriff Toney Edwards said the other inmate was not injured in the incident.
