A 2-year-old is expected to survive after he accidentally shot himself with a St. Louis Sheriff deputy’s weapon Saturday.
The toddler found the unattended gun inside a room during a familial gathering in Ferguson. He suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Police said the sheriff’s deputy whose gun was involved in the shooting was the toddler’s uncle.
The deputy was arrested on suspicion of endangering the welfare of a child.
Ferguson Police said in a statement that the injured toddler is expected to recover.
“GREAT NEWS; We are happy to learn that the 2-year-old toddler injured in the accidental shooting recently is recovering well and may be home with family soon,” the statement read.
“Thank you to Detective Numan and the officers on this case which serves as a tragic example of what can happen when guns are not properly secured in your household.”
