Authorities in Natchez, Mississippi learned about a human body concealed in the woods during a routine traffic stop Thursday.
Officers had pulled over the driver of a small pickup truck for possession of drug paraphernalia and while detaining the man, he “spontaneously” said he knew where a deceased person’s body was located.
“The suspect at that time stated that he had information about a corpse in the nearby area,” Commander Jerry Ford said.
The officers then called for backup and headed to the location the driver gave them.
“We came out and actually went off in the woods maybe 10 feet, and discovered that there was a dead corpse,” said Ford.
The official said that officers found skeletal remains without the head adding that it was evident the body had been there for a while.
“We really don’t want to speculate as to what his role is or what he knows or doesn’t know, but we’re just basically sticking to the facts at this particular time, trying to see where it’s going to lead to,” Ford said.
No immediate information about the decedent’s identity, cause, or manner of death was available pending an autopsy.
The remains were handed over to the Mississippi State Crime Lab as the investigation continues.
