Teen charged after ‘mishandling’ firearm; accidentally shooting 13-year-old cousin dead

A Mobile, Alabama teen is behind bars facing manslaughter charges after he accidentally shot his 13-year-old cousin dead while “mishandling” a firearm Wednesday night.

Terry Lamar Penn, 18, and the victim were returning to a Macks Street home from a gas station at around 11:45 p.m. when the shooting unfolded, police said.

  • “Mr. Penn was in possession of a firearm, and he was handling the firearm carelessly and certainly with reckless disregard” when the weapon went off, Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine said.

    “And Mr. Penn in my opinion, should not have been in possession of that firearm. Maybe he’s not old enough to understand the consequences of what has happened.”

    “Okay. But here we are. We’re faced with yet another child being taken, snatched up out of our community.”
