A “catastrophic” plane crash has left no survivors after a single-engine aircraft exploded near a highway in Nashville late Monday evening.
The Federal Aviation Administration and Nashville Metro Police said that the plane crashed off eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 at around 8 p.m.
The pilot of the doomed plane called Nashville’s John Tune airport shortly before the crash informing them that the airplane was experiencing engine and power failure and that it needed to land.
The plane, which left Mount Sterling in Kentucky at 7:19 p.m., “imploded on impact” according to a Nashville Fire Department representative.
The official added that the “impact was catastrophic and did not leave any survivors.”
Witness James Hollin described the moment he and his children spotted the burning plane wreck while driving along the interstate.
“My kids tried to rubber neck but couldn’t make out what it was that burned so badly,” he said.
“They kept saying it wasn’t a car and my mind didn’t expect it to be a plane.”
