Mental healthcare facility patient kills roommate for ‘talking under his breath’

A patient at a Houston mental healthcare facility is accused of strangling and beating his roommate to death earlier this week.

Erik Daniel Bonito, 32, was reportedly moved to a new room at the Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital Wednesday afternoon after he was involved in a fight.

Prosecutors allege that shortly after he was placed in the new room, Bonito beat and strangled another patient to death.

    “It’s absolutely tragic when you know you’re sending your loved one to a mental healthcare facility to basically get them treatment and something happens like this,” Harris County Assistant District Attorney Keegan Childers said.

    “This is absolutely not what you expect. You’re sending them there to get help, right, and the absolute worst consequence happens.”

    Bonito was arrested and charged with murder. Court records showed that he was involved in a January assault on a worker at another hospital.
