A 14-year-old is accused of stealing their family car and causing a fiery crash that claimed a teen girl’s life early Tuesday.
Los Angeles officers spotted the Toyota driving without headlights shortly after midnight and tried to stop it but the driver took off at high speed.
The child behind the wheel ended up slamming the car into a pole at Ventura Boulevard and Balboa Avenue causing the car to burst into flames.
Officers rushed to the wrecked car trying to pull out the three occupants using a baton to break windows and a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames.
The driver and an 18-year-old girl in the passenger seat survived the ordeal but a teenage girl in the back seat died at the scene.
“There are some families that are going to be suffering as a result of this. It’s absolutely terrible,” Los Angeles Police Captain Jeff Hollis said.
