A Rikers Island detainee repeatedly stabbed a fellow inmate at the New York City lockup Tuesday.
Police said Phillip Moreno, who was accused of murdering a pregnant woman and her boyfriend in Staten Island, attacked a fellow prisoner at around 11 a.m. while they worked in the pantry.
Moreno used a sharpened piece of metal and repeatedly stabbed the other inmate in the head, neck, arms, and hands.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where he remains.
“Vicious, violent attacks on individuals in custody will not be tolerated,” said the Department of Corrections Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie.
“No one in our jails deserves to be a victim of violence.”
