An Ohio inmate took his own life Friday shortly after he overpowered a guard and escaped from a hospital, officials said.
The detainee attacked the Montgomery County deputy who was guarding him while he received treatment at Kettering Health Dayton at around 1 p.m.
He stole the deputy’s weapon and fled to a nearby residence. Police forced entry to the home shortly later after hearing a shot and found the inmate dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.
Authorities said the inmate did not live at the home or know anyone living there.
The deputy was treated at the hospital for minor wounds. No other people were harmed in the hospital or the home.
The inmate’s identity was not immediately made public.
