A Salt Lake City man was charged with murder after he allegedly beat his co-worker to death with a hammer for “messing with his stuff.”

The gruesome slaying took place at a temporary storage facility for the homeless called “A Place for Your Stuff” earlier this month, police said.

A witness spotted bloody handprints on the wall and a carpet in the back office on January 3 and asked suspect Nathan David Evans, 41, about his coworker’s whereabouts.

Evans answered that 65-year-old David Hinkebein who was not seen at work for several days was “fine.”

  • The following day, the witness asked Evans about Hinkebein again, to which he answered “He’s done.”

Police found the body of Henkebein next to a bloody hammer and a black garbage bag containing bloody clothes in the back office of the warehouse.

The medical examiner’s office determined that Hinkebein’s head was struck at least 15 times and his neck and throat were also cut.

Investigators said Evans admitted to a driver just before the crime that he “was going down to a warehouse and was going to…kill a guy down there by bashing his head in.”

The driver also revealed that Evans was planning to kill the guy because he “messed with his stuff and [Evans] did not like the way he was being treated.”
