A prisoner at a Georgia jail was killed by his cellmate on Thursday, marking the second murder at the overcrowded facility in a few weeks.
Abdul Hosea Woodward is accused of killing one of his three cellmates shortly after being moved to a new Clayton County prison cell where he had to sleep on the floor.
Officials said Woodward “brutally beat” his cellmate leading to his death.
“The door closed and when it opened again, Woodard murdered one of his roommates,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The jail’s capacity is 1,536 beds. It currently houses about 1,900 inmates.
“The jail is currently overcrowded and has over 300 inmates sleeping on the floor,” the statement added.
“This causes issues among the inmates. When one inmate uses the toilet and the other inmate’s head is down by the toilet, you will have fights, and when you are in a room where everything in the room is steel, metal, concrete, it becomes a deadly cage match.”
Woodward was brought to the county jail following his arrest on Dec. 15 over a baggage removal incident at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
