Deputy shot dead by suspect during traffic stop in Mississippi

A George County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in the line of duty Thursday evening as he conducted a traffic stop, authorities in Mississippi said.

Deputy Jeremy Malone was fatally shot in front of a Dollar General at around 5:15 p.m. as he conducted a traffic stop on U.S. Route 98 in Rocky Creek.

The suspect took off after shooting Deputy Malone leading police on a chase that ended out of the county with his death on U.S. 98 in Perry County.

  • “We ask that you keep Deputy Malone’s family, as well as the George County Sheriff’s Office and community in your thoughts and prayers,” George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said.

    Governor Tate Reeves announced the deputy’s tragic death on social media.

    “Tonight, Mississippi’s heart breaks for George County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jeremy Malone who was shot and killed in the line of duty.”

    “Mississippi will always remember Deputy Malone. Our state remains deeply thankful for all our law enforcement officers who bravely place their lives on the line every day in defense of our communities,” the governor wrote.
