Murder suspect in DC gruesome hatchet attack busted in Indiana

A suspected murderer accused of killing a DC woman with a hatchet on Tuesday was arrested the following day in Indiana.

Police said that 31-year-old Reyna Garcia-Lopez was found unconscious and not breathing with stab wounds and lacerations covering her body inside a residence in the 1200 block of 11th Street shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The victim died shortly later from her wounds. Investigators determined that she was attacked with a hatchet or a small ax.

  • 54-year-old Alberto Valle-Carranza was named a suspect in the gruesome slaying. He was located in Michigan City by the Great Lake Regional Fugitive Task Force and taken into custody.

    Authorities did not provide a motive for the killing or the nature of the suspect and victim relationship.

    Valle-Carranza was charged with second-degree murder while armed. He is expected to be extradited to D.C.
