An inmate at a California jail died after an attack involving two fellow prisoners, authorities said.
30-year-old Oracio Ramirez was attacked by two inmates in a recreational yard of Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad.
A correction officer intervened firing a less-than-lethal device. Ramirez received life-saving measures at the scene but died about 20 minutes later.
A handmade weapon was recovered from the scene. The involved prisoners were placed in restricted housing as a homicide investigation proceeded.
Ramirez was convicted of murder, robbery, and criminal gang activity and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole.
While behind bars, he was sentenced to an additional eight years for an attempted murder.
