Inmate stabbed to death at California maximum-security jail

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating the murder of an inmate at the hands of two other prisoners at a maximum-security jail in Tehachapi.

David Moreno, 38, died on his way to hospital Wednesday after he was attacked by two fellow inmates at the California Correctional Institution.

  • Officials said that chemical agents were used to break up the inmates’ fight and three handmade weapons were recovered from the scene.

    Carlos Cervantes, a 39-year-old inmate serving a sentence of life for murder, and 41-year-old Armando Taylor, a 41-year-old murder convict with previous in-prison assault offenses, were accused of Moreno’s murder.

    Moreno was also serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for an attempted murder conviction.
