Texas gunman tried to escape custody after shooting 6 people dead

A Texas gunman accused of shooting six people including his own parents this week has allegedly tried to escape after his arrest.

34-year-old Shane James Jr. went on a rampage on Tuesday in San Antonio and Austin before his arrest following a high-chase police chase and a shootout with an Austin Police officer.

  • James tried to escape from the Travis County Jail the following day as an officer opened the door to his housing unit but was taken down by force, Senior Public Information Officer Kristen Dark said.

    "James pushed past that officer and ran into the hallway,” Dark stated. “Corrections Officers detained him and he resisted. He was ultimately restrained.”

    It was revealed that the gunman had a history of mental illness and was previously arrested for shoving his parents and a sibling in 2022.
