NH man tries to take own life after stabbing elderly mother to death

A New Hampshire man was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed his 70-year-old mother to death inside her Goffstown home.

47-year-old Thomas Humphrey allegedly tried to take his own life after stabbing his mother Linda Tufts.

He was found with self-inflicted stab wounds and taken to a hospital for treatment. A fire that started at the home was extinguished.

  • A motive for the crime is unclear as all documents and affidavits in the case were sealed. Humphrey’s next court appearance is set for Monday.

    “We typically do that in homicide investigations, because even though an arrest has been made, such as in this case, the investigation is active and ongoing, and police still have additional witnesses they want to interview, and we want to make sure those interviews and the process itself, its integrity, is maintained,” Senior Assistant Attorney General Peter Hinckley commented.

    “So, that’s why we typically seal the arrest affidavits, and we typically unseal them after indictment, which is about three months.”
