A male pedestrian was fatally struck by a Metro-North train Friday afternoon, police in Ansonia said.
The tragedy unfolded at around 1:40 p.m. when the engineer on the train spotted a man, believed to be about 65 years old, “crouched on the tracks” north of the Division Street Rail crossing in Ansonia, Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesperson Aaron Donovan said.
The engineer activated the train’s emergency brake but the pedestrian did not attempt to flee as the train approached him.
Donovan said that unfortunately, the engineer couldn’t stop before impacting the trespasser, fatally striking him.
First responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene at 1:57 p.m.
Donovan noted that the train was traveling at 42 mph at the time of the crash, which is a normal speed for that section of the tracks.
