A Chicago pastor was found beaten to death inside her burglarized home over the weekend, and police identified a man she was helping as the main suspect.
Marisol Berrios was killed inside her West Garfield Park home early on Saturday, police said. Her suspected killer, 59-year-old Marvin Wells, was found with her stolen purse inside a crashed vehicle and taken into custody.
Friends of Berrios recognized the man as someone Berrios was recently trying to help and to whom she offered food.
“When I saw his face, my heart was broken because this was someone she fed and even given money to,” friend Leatisha Bailey said.
“Marisol would say, ‘Honey, I know they are addicts, they just need a chance, and they just need something to do.”
The slain pastor’s sister described the suspect as “trash” after her other sibling made the grim discovery of Berrios’ body.
“We need her here. We needed her by us. She’s no longer here anymore because of that trash.”
