‘It’s getting out of hand’: Innocent Georgia college student, 19, killed in shooting while sleeping at home

No arrests were made in connection to the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Georgia woman who was killed Saturday while sleeping at her Wrens home.

Khia Shields was found unresponsive at around 1 a.m. after gunfire erupted outside her Washington Street residence, police said.

“Everybody loved their Khia,” Shields’ mother said. “She was just this warm person, and they just took her away from me.”

  • Shields was a student at Georgia Southern University and worked at a local Walmart. The young woman aspired to become a teacher and was her mother’s only child.

    “Just a great-spirited, beautiful young lady that was just taken from me just too soon,” the grieving mom said.

    “We have to come together as one and as a community and stop this gun violence because it’s getting out of hand.”
