Alabama basketball player, 17, dies after suffering medical emergency at school

A 17-year-old Alabama student died Thursday after suffering a medical emergency at Pinson Valley High School, authorities said.

The teen was identified as Caleb White. According to officials, he was a basketball player at the high school.

“One of our senior students suffered a medical emergency at school today,” said PVHS Principal Michael Turner.

“Lifesaving efforts were immediately started, and first responders were called. Sadly, the student was later pronounced deceased.”

  • Pinson Valley Mayor Joe Cochran sent his condolences to the family of the late student.

    “Heartbroken. No words can be gathered to provide comfort to a family and community experiencing the loss of young life,” he said in a statement.

    Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin described White as a “fantastic student and a good person.”

    “He was loved by school staff and his fellow students. We will all assemble together and support the family,” he said.
