A Rikers Island inmate was found dead in his cell one week after another detainee died at the troubled New York correction facility.
The Correction Department said in a statement that Curtis Davis, 44, was discovered on the ground of his cell at around 5:10 a.m. Sunday by a correction officer patrolling the housing unit at George R. Vierno Center.
Other jail staffers joined the officer and started performing CPR on Davis until EMS arrived at the scene at around 5:45 a.m.
An automatic defibrillator was used on Davis for several minutes before a doctor pronounced him dead.
Jail records show that Davis was arrested on June 1 after he allegedly stabbed a 29-year-old man in the eye near his Kensington home.
Davis' death marks the seventh death at the infamous detention facility this year and the second in just over a week after that of William Johnstone, 47.
