Climber, 21, falls to death down rocky ravine while hiking in Oregon

While hiking with his girlfriend in Oregon's Cascade Mountains, a 21-year-old college student fell hundreds of feet down an “extremely dangerous” ravine on Monday.

Joel Tranby was trying to climb the summit of North Sister Mountain when he plummeted around 500 feet at around 12:20 p.m.

The victim's girlfriend called the police asking for help after she couldn't see where Tranby landed.

  • “Unfortunately, he stopped responding verbally before searchers arrived,” Sgt. Tom Speldrich said.

    Police said that the ravine is inaccessible by foot and “extremely dangerous.”

    Search crews couldn't locate Tranby's body until on Wednesday and are trying to safely retrieve the remains.

    “Joel was doing something he loved, with the person he loved, in the outdoors and we know that brought him joy,” the victim's parents said in a statement.
