Utah toddler, 2, wanders away from dad at football field; drowns in irrigation canal

A Utah toddler was found dead in an irrigation canal Friday, hours after he wandered away from his father at a football field, police said.

Spanish Fork authorities said that 2-year-old Emit Burrell was located in the canal less than a mile away from where he separated from his dad.

Emit was reported missing at around 8:40 a.m. Police said that he was at the American Leadership Academy's field with his father who assists with coaching in the school.

  • Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the field and spotted the toddler leaving the grounds.

    All efforts to revive the toddler went unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

    “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family as well as the community,” police said in a statement.
