The decomposing body parts of a Maryland grandmother were discovered by officers at her daughter's Landover home on Friday.
Police said that Margaret Craig, 71, was killed during an argument with her 44-year-old daughter Candace Craig over the fraudulent use of a credit card on May 23.
Officers conducting a welfare check on the elderly woman ten days later, “immediately smelled the odor of decomposition.”
Investigators said that Candace's 19-year-old daughter discovered her grandmother's death the following day and accepted to help her mother dispose of the body.
“After that, Craig and her daughter dismembered the body, I believe using a chainsaw, and then attempted to dispose of the parts of the body using fire on a grill and in a bonfire,” Assistant State's Attorney Jessica Garth said.
The rotten remains were mutilated beyond recognition and stuffed in plastic trash bags, authorities said.
“To say it's disturbing is an understatement,” Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy said. “It's horrifying.”
