'Nice guy' accused of killing neighbor with hammer after inviting her for drink: 'There was no need'

A Massachusetts man was charged with murder after his dying neighbor was found with fatal wounds in his kitchen late Friday.

Authorities said that Dinis Moreira, 69, invited 58-year-old Valerie Oakhem to his home for a drink before bludgeoning her head and face with a hammer.

A relative of Moreira came to the Bridgewater home shortly after midnight to find the woman lying on the kitchen floor, dying from traumatic wounds.

  • “The victim was trembling and gasping for air and appeared to be attempting to roll over,” authorities reported.

    The woman died at a local hospital. Prosecutors said that she and Moreiro were friends.

    “Who expects their family member murdered with a hammer?” Oakhem's friend said.

    “There was no need. Absolutely no need. This woman helped him all the time since his wife passed away. All the time. She didn't deserve this, nothing. She didn't deserve none of this.”
