A Rhode Island man was fatally shot by police following a double homicide and a wild chase Wednesday apparently triggered by a peeping Tom incident.

52-year-old James Harrison gunned down his own mother and a next-door neighbor and shot a 15-year-old girl who survived her injuries before fleeing the scene to a nearby cemetery, police said.

When officers finally located his vehicle, Harrison reportedly “drove at these police officers head-on towards their vehicles nearly striking them,” Police Chief Michael Winquist said.

  • “A pursuit took place after that incident,” the official said adding that Harrison drove erratically through Plainfield Pike before crashing into a police cruiser and then into a rock.

The gunman eventually emerged from his car pointing a firearm at officers who shot him dead. Some of the responding officers were taken to hospital for evaluation following the chase.

A motive for the incident has yet to be determined but neighbors reported that Harrison was caught earlier this week peeping into a stranger's house.
