Authorities in Cleveland have arrested a 16-year-old mother accused of leaving two infants in a garbage can Saturday.
Police were initially alerted to the deceased infants by the teen's mother who told the dispatcher that her daughter had just delivered two babies and “threw them in the garbage.”
The mother said that she was unaware of her daughter's pregnancy until the tragic incident.
“Preliminary information indicates that the mother of the children, a 16-year-old female, had given birth to the babies days earlier,” police said.
The infants' cause of death is being determined. Their mother was taken to a hospital after her arrest.
“Investigators will present the facts of this case to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Prosecutor's Office,” police added.
