A Rikers Island inmate ended his life Sunday after jumping to his death while on the way to his housing unit.
Rubu Zhao, 52, jumped from the top of a set of stairs and fell on his head in the George R. Vierno Center, authorities said.
He succumbed to his injuries at Elmhurst Hospital late Tuesday.

“I am saddened by the circumstances that led to Mr. Zhao's passing and I offer my condolences to his family,” said Commissioner Louis Molina.
“The health and safety of everyone in our custody is a top priority, and a full investigation is underway to determine how this unfortunate incident occurred.”
The decedent was facing murder charges over the December stabbing death of a 48-year-old woman.
