Inmate facing murder charges leaps to death on Rikers Island

A Rikers Island inmate ended his life Sunday after jumping to his death while on the way to his housing unit.

Rubu Zhao, 52, jumped from the top of a set of stairs and fell on his head in the George R. Vierno Center, authorities said.

He succumbed to his injuries at Elmhurst Hospital late Tuesday.

  • “I am saddened by the circumstances that led to Mr. Zhao's passing and I offer my condolences to his family,” said Commissioner Louis Molina.

    “The health and safety of everyone in our custody is a top priority, and a full investigation is underway to determine how this unfortunate incident occurred.”

    The decedent was facing murder charges over the December stabbing death of a 48-year-old woman.
