A Georgia mom was charged with murder and cruelty to children over the death of her 22-month-old daughter whose body was recovered from a pond in an office park late Thursday.
Police in Sandy Springs were called to the scene over a woman acting oddly and officers quickly determined that the woman was experiencing “some type of breakdown.”
“They live in the area, the father showed up...found her there with us and asked where the child is,” Sgt. Matt McGuinnis said.
“She responded with something like, 'She's in the bottom of the pool.' We don't think it's an accident at this time.”
The woman, later identified as Asia Calabares-Lewis, was caught on surveillance footage walking toward the pond with the toddler and returning minutes later without her.
“This is beyond what anyone ever thought to imagine,” a family member of the deceased toddler said.
“Mental health is a deadly sniper that crept up on us in the most tragic way.”
