Driver killed in Amtrak train crash after trying to cross rail 'despite safety arms being activated'

The driver of a vehicle was fatally struck while trying to cross the Amtrack rail crossing despite safety arms being activated, Mobile police said late Wednesday.

28-year-old Chadwick Timmons did not survive the collision that happened at the intersection of Navco Road and Dog River Drive North at around 6:30 p.m.

Timmons was reportedly “heading south on Navco Road when he allegedly attempted to cross the rail crossing despite the safety arms being activated and indicating an oncoming train,” authorities said in a statement.

    “The collision caused the vehicle to catch fire, which resulted in further damage.”

    The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the collision is underway.
