Freight train derails in rural Maine causing forest blaze, hurting 3 workers

Maine authorities said Saturday that a Canadian Pacific freight train derailed into a wooded area near Rockwood hurting three rail workers and setting a small forest blaze.

“A total of three locomotive engines and six rail cars carrying lumber and electrical wiring derailed into a wooded area, where they caught fire and started a small forest fire,” the Maine Forest Department said in a statement.

  • Authorities said that the train also carried hazardous materials in separate rail cars that did not veer off the track and were considered “not at risk.”

    In a statement, Canadian Pacific blamed the derailment, the third in the US this week, on a track washout that was likely caused by a combination of melting ice and debris.

    Rockwood Fire and Rescue posted on Facebook asking residents of the Somerset County village to “stay clear.”
