South Portland news, Maine news.

A Maine teen was apprehended without incident on Wednesday after multiple law enforcement joined forces to conduct the “very high risk” arrest, police said.

Police Chief Dan Ahern said that the South Portland High School student's father, who owned several high-powered rifles, tried to interfere in the arrest before being shot with a bean bag round.

The teen was accused of making threats to “cause serious harm to individuals and groups using specific weapons,” according to school officers' reports.

  • “We developed information that the subject was in possession of several firearms or had access to several firearms,” Ahern said.

“That elevated our risk assessment to a very high risk and took the initiative to engage our regional SWAT team to help us make that arrest due to the fact that there was a large amount of weapons that we suspected were inside the home.”

Ahern added that in addition to the Portland-based SWAt team, the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office and the FBI all joined the operation.
