Authorities in Martinsburg, West Virginia are investigating after employees at a local water treatment plant made the gore discovery of a lifeless human body on Thursday.
The body was found in a waste tank that is adjacent to the treatment facility shortly after employees arrived at work, police said on Facebook.
According to authorities, the waste tank where the body was found contains materials that are removed from water during purification processes.
Water in the waste tank is not reintroduced into purified water that makes its way for distribution.
Staff called the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office and emergency medical services following the shocking discovery.
An investigation is underway as local officials consult with regulatory agencies to assure the safety of the distributed water.
